Big Bear Valley Outdoor Adventure Days Festival invites you to unplug and come out to play
Find out all the Big Bear Valley has to offers in outdoor activity during the two Big Bear Valley Outdoor Adventure Days Festivals planned this summer
Unplug and go outside. That’s the frightening concept of the Big Bear Valley Outdoor Adventure Days Festival taking place June 3 and 4 in the Big Bear Lake Village.
Take heart and remember before the computer, cell phone, tablet and mp3 player there was outside. Be it foreign concept, brazen challenge, outlandish idea or avenue to desperately needed release, scientific research shows that everyone needs to unplug and go outside once in a while.
Those same studies say that without a screen to entertain and distract, folks don’t sit as much, and that’s a good thing. Those reports also show that prolonged sitting can cause illness, depression, obesity and early death.
Going outside and getting a little exercise helps decrease stress levels and combat the dreaded FOMO (Fear Of Missing Out – Anxiety that an exciting or interesting event may currently be happening elsewhere without you, often aroused by posts seen on a social media website) propagated by intense connection to the all powerful and addictive Internet. Those same studies show that going outside boosts creativity. It helps us to sleep better. And it will allow you to discover if your use of digital devices has crossed that thin red line between habit and addiction.
So, unplug, look up, discover friends, family and the fact that real life doesn’t happen on Facebook.
Festival organizers believe that Big Bear has so much to offer outside that they use the word, “Ecotourism,” to describe the movement. Can there be so much to do outside that folks will actually travel to the Big Bear Valley just to be outside? Find out!
New discoveries about outside await you during the Big Bear Valley Outdoor Adventure Days Festival at the intersection of Pine Knot Avenue and Village Drive June 3 & 4 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. each day. There will be displays extolling the virtues of nature & discovery hikes, water sports, birding hikes, off-road rides, biking, horseback riding, lake activities such as canoeing, kayaking, paddle boarding, wildlife sightings, discovering gorgeous scenery, amazing wildflowers and much more.
Browse the sponsor booths for the Big Bear Valley Outdoor Adventure Days Festival — Solar City, Big Bear Disposal and the city of Big Bear Lake — for information about eco-friendly businesses and ecotourism. Kids can enjoy a coloring booth and other activities.
There’s the opportunity to engage with others in a bird walk on the new Happy Hill Trail near the Big Bear Lake Performing Arts Center, tours of the pebble plain in Moonridge or the Metcalf Meadow wetlands. Take a tour of the lake aboard the paddleboat Miss Liberty, canoe and kayak paddling, off-road rides in a Pinszgauer four-wheel drive vehicle and guided hikes.
Tours are free to the public.
A second Big Bear Valley Outdoor Adventure Days Festival is slated for July 29 and 30 at the Big Bear Discovery Center. For more information about the Outdoor Adventure Days, visit www.bigbearecotourism.org.
